In the summer of 2019, the middle-aged couple behind EcommerceBytes, a trade publication that helps eBay vendors optimize sales, become the target of online hate, cyberstalking threats and bizarre deliveries including a bloody pig mask and a funeral wreath. As the harassment intensifies, the police and FBI close in on a Silicon Valley giant and some very unlikely suspects. Whatever It Takes tells the stranger-than-fiction story of a Fortune 500 company whose founding principle is that “people are basically good” and yet whose security team goes to unbelievable criminal lengths to protect their CEO from a corporate raider. This is a timely true-crime caper about corporate dysfunction and the disintegration of ethics, as well as a reminder that little has changed in the post-#MeToo world—men in the C-suite still enjoy impunity and golden parachutes while young women endure workplace discrimination and intimidation. Meanwhile, innocent grassroots newsletter journalists are nothing but the collateral damage of Silicon Valley and corporate America’s criminal behaviour.
